25jährig zu Fuß von Neapel nach Wien wandernd, bereiste Paton auch Osteuropa, Syrien und Ägypten und verfaßte "an interesting series of books" (DNB). Später war Paton im diplomatischen Dienst in Wien, Missolonghi und anderswo tätig.

Robert Gordon (1791-1847) war "associated with the Duke of Wellington as minister plenipotentiary at Vienna in 1815, 1817, and 1821" (DNB). Später als außerordentlicher Botschafter in Konstantinopel tätig, wandte er sich 1831 von der Politik ab und bekleidete nur mehr einmal ein politisches Amt, das des Botschafters in Wien (1841-46).
