Interesting correspondence with the antiquarian book and autograph dealer David Salomon in Berlin. Asserting that he "doesn't understand German, or, at least, very little", Baccelli wrote in French, inquiring about autographs and negotiating discounts.
In the earliest letter from 30 April 1930, he mentions some of the most prominent names in Salomon's catalogue like Schlegel, Luigi Galvani, and Frederick III, asking for a general discount of 10% "that the other antiquarian bookstores give" him.
On 12 November 1931, Baccelli wonders why he has received an autograph by Luigi Volta that he hadn't ordered, stating that he would buy another Volta but not at the price asked by Salomon.
The third letter from 28 January 1932 was to confirm the purchase of two autographs by Charles VI of Austria and his spouse Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick. He also inquires about an autograph by "Charles III the true King of Naples (1716-1788), the signature definitely autograph, not stamped, at a good price, not expensive [...]", thus referring to Charles III of Spain.
This is the renewal of a request in a postcard from 11 January 1932, wherein he ordered an autograph by Charles III from Salomon's catalogue.
The final letter from 27 November 1932 concerns an autograph by Philip Melanchthon: "As you can guarantee with absolute certainty that the a.[autograph] 120 is from Melanchthon's hand, I enclose the price of the autographs, [...] I also accept the subscription at the head and the cut page [...]." - Baccelli served briefly as minister of the post in the first government of Sidney Sonnino in 1906.
Well preserved.
