- Several of the contributors counted among Hugo's circle of friends: Marie Nodier travelled to Switzerland with him; Louis Boulanger was the official painter of the Hugo family; Auguste Souillard Saint-Valry was a childhood friend of Hugo's and later trustee of his literary estate.
