The rural domain of Méplier (Saône-et-Loire) was acquired in 1854 by the abbé François Béraud (1807-93), priest at Blanzy, to establish a relief programme for orphans and poor or morally neglected children. The property of 54 acres was for the greater part unsuitable land without proper accommodation, and great efforts were made to cultivate the land and develop the property into an agricultural institution. Montferroux in Gourdon was acquired in 1860 for the relief of orphaned and criminal girls. The institutions were united in 1888 when the "Société civile des Orphelinats agricoles du Méplier et de Montferroux" was founded. The minutes of the proceedings here present include the period from 29 November 1888 to 27 December 1927 and are all signed by the administrators; the proceedings of the first years include the signature of the abbé Béraud.
