This second edition of an English-Pekinese dictionary was printed by the American Presbyterian Mission Press as part of a movement of American protestant missionaries that set it upon themselves to spread Christianity amongst the Chinese people. Deep understanding of the distinct dialects of the vast country was essential to bo able to succesfully carry out the mission. Therefore the Presbytarian Mission Press published multiple English dictionaries for the different dialacts in China, as well as the common Mandarin. The English author George Carter Stent was a customs officer in Shanghai, which shows that the original need for the first edition of this dictionary comes from an economic source.

In good condition.
