Second edition, first of two volumes only, of this "at the time very remarkable work" (cf. Brunet) by the Viennese court librarian Denis (1729-1800), first issued in 1777. Divided into three parts, the first two discussing the history of the book from ancient times up to the Renaissance, including remarks on the invention of script and the shape of letters, on writing material and utensils, as well as a large section on letterpress printing. The third part covers the developments in the book sector up to the author's days, presenting famous European libraries and "representing the division of the humanities for the classification of a library" (cf. De Backer/S.), illustrated by the engraved plate and the folding table. The former shows the correlation of theology, law, philosophy, medicine, mathematics, history and philology with each other, while the latter lists these disciplines with their subcategories.

Wrappers slightly waterstained. Wide-margined, untrimmed copy. Lower right-hand corner of the title-page torn, not touching the text. Pages 177-184 transposed by the binder. From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel, with his signed and stamped ownership, dated 1977, to inner wrappers.
