[Russia - Edinburgh Missionary Society]. Report of the Edinburgh Missionary Society, for 1817 [and: 1818].

Edinburgh, A. Balfour, for the Society, 1817-1818.

8vo. 77, (1) pp. (without the plate). 90, (2) pp. (1818 Report prefixed by): Grey, Henry. The Diffusion of Christianity Dependent on the Exertions of Christians: A Sermon, Preached in Lady Glenorchy's Chapel, on April 2, 1818. To which is added, the Report of the Directors. Ibid., 1818. (2), 44 pp. Contemporary marbled half calf.

Two exceedingly rare Reports of the Edinburgh Missionary Society, founded in 1796, for the years 1817 ("With an appendix, containing a geographical and historical account of the Society's missionary stations in Asiatic Russia, etc.") and 1818 ("With an appendix, containing extracts of correspondence, of Mr. Glen's Journal, and other documents, illustrative of the statements in the report"), which latter issue was prefixed by the separately paginated sermon preached in Lady Glenorchy's Chapel in Low Calton (demolished in 1844 to make way for Waverley Station) by Henrry Grey, Minister of the Chapel of Ease, St. Cuthbert's. Gives extensive accounts of the Society's missionary activity among various Muslim and Jewish peoples carried out in Russian Tartary and beyond, focusing on the Nogay Tatars (Russian subjects), Kuban Tatars (Turkish subjects), Circassians, Karbadians or Kabards, and Abkhazians (newly subjected to Russia), and including topographical and ethnological discussions of Crimea, Astrachan, and Orenburg.

Binding a little rubbed at the extremeties, but well preserved. Removed from the Imperial Russian Military Academy, Library of the Asiatic Department, with their bookplate and stamps.
