I: "I read with great interest the 'Declaration of Irish grievances' you kindly sent me. I was myself in Ireland many years ago and I remember how painfully I was struck by the contrast between the protestants and the Catholic Churches. The spacious and beautiful cathedrals, built by Catholics, are given to protestants and remain half empty [...]" (10 Sept. 1864).

II: "I am very thankful to you for sending me the note on Mr. MacCulloch. I read it with great interest. As much as I can judge, having but little known Mr Mculloch [!], the descriptions of his conversations in society, ist probably just. I have had an opportunity of seeing and hearing his jovial and pleasant talk [...]" (25 Nov. 1864).
