[Waxworks] - Salleneuve.

4to. 2 pp. (broadsheet). Printed within woodcut borders.

Rare broadsheet advertising a show of wax sculptures modelled by the wax artist Salleneuve and presented from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the beer hall in Bautzen's Schlossgasse, owned by Mr. Domschisch, Bautzen's Deputy Comptroller of Weights, and formerly by the mayor, Gottfried Richter. Among the celebrities on display are the late Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa, Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette, and the Dauphin, Robespierre, Marat, Charlotte Corday, Custine, and Napoleon, Voltaire, Rousseau, Lavater, as well as notorious scenes of adventure and murder. "Should any visitor wish to see his own features rendered in this newly-invented fashion, the artist will be happy to extend his services".

Little is known about Salleneuve, who is here described as hailing from Stettin (Szczecin). By 1803 he had apparently teamed up with the fellow wax sculptor Padovany, and the figures they exhibited in Prague that year (as listed in Dlabacz, Allgemeines historisches Künstler-Lexikon für Böhmen II, 420 ff.) are largely the same as those in the present, earlier advertisement.

Insignificant browning; a slight tear at the lower edge professionally repaired. A unique survival.
