To his friend, the metaphysical writer and philosopher James Frederick Ferrier (1808-64): "I return you the leaf & your note with some interlinear comments. I must confess I do not yet see any contradiction or ambiguity [...] But I would like to hear why you accuse him of [th]is, for it must be for some passage not in Bk. V & VI [...]".

A clipping with another signature mounted below the text. Letter mounted on a tab. 2 tears, caused by breaking the seal, rebacked with paper, one slightly affecting the text.

Enclosed is an engraved portrait of the Scottish diplomat Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803), whom a previous collector apparently confused with the philosopher.
