Writing as commander of the Aldershot Division, to an army general, with suggestions for improving the military: "I am very sorry indeed that my engagement here today prevents me coming to town to listen to your lecture which I have no doubt will be most highly appreciated by the Military attendance. I shall anxiously wait for the reports. Gen. Russell who I am sorry to say has left my command has lent me your book on drill which I am studying. I think you will find some of our Cavalry movements are performed on your principle & I see no difficulty in adopting it to our Infantry [...]".

With 2 strips of old mounting tape on verso.

Scarlett, who served as Brigadier-General in the Battle of Balaclava (25 October 1854), is best remembered for his successful "Charge of the Heavy Brigade", which immediately preceded the notoriously disastrous "Charge of the Light Brigade".
