Extremely rare first edition of this charming Czech prayerbook, ‘The Rose of Sion. Catholic Prayerbook for Women and Daughters’, with a chromolithographed title-page and 4 further plates.
The author was a Bohemian monk, Boleslav Jablonksy (1813-1881), mainly known for his collections of secular poetry. Here, we find a number of Czech hymns (pp. 183-242), perhaps including some of Jablonksy’s own composition, alongside specific prayers to be used by women in times of sickness, death, marriage, childbirth, wealth, and so on.
OCLC records just a handful of copies of any edition of this prayerbook in libraries worldwide, and the earliest recorded is the second edition of 1852.
