To Charles de Beauregard, editor of "La Gazette de France", concerning some upcoming soirées: "J'attendais pour vous adresser mon invitation, que la composition de mes soirées affaissent assez d'intérêt pour que vous passez y trouver quelques délassements. J'espère que mes trois dernières réunions seront composées [...]".

Zimmerman attended the Paris Conservatory in 1798, studying piano with François-Adrien Boieldieu. He became piano assistant at the Conservatory in 1811 and full professor there in 1816, serving until 1848. Among his students were Charles Gounod (who married one of his daughters), Georges Bizet, César Franck, Charles-Valentin Alkan, Ambroise Thomas, Louis Lacombe, Alexandre Goria, and Lefébure-Wély. Zimmerman wrote two operas, "L'enlèvement" (Opéra-Comique, 1830) and "Nausicaa" (never staged). His principal legacy is considered his "Encyclopédie du pianist", a complete method of the piano, including a treatise on harmony and counterpoint.
