Recommending his colleague, the botanist and naturalist Claude Gay (1800-73): "Mon cher et illustre confrère. Je recommande à votre bieveillance particuliaire le porteur de ces lignes, Mr Claude Gay, un des naturalistes les plus distingués de la France, qui a passé des longues années dans l'Amerique meridionale et publié à Paris un magnifique ouvrage sur le Chili. Botaniste conformé, il est occupé avec un grand succès dans les cordillères [...]".

Gay went to Chile in 1928 to teach physics and natural history in Santiago, and in 1829 he accepted a position as a researcher for the Chilean government to carry out a scientific survey of the country. He returned to France in 1832 and presented his collections to the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris before returning to Chile in 1834. After having visited Peru in 1839, he lived in Santiago, where he wrote the multi-volume "Historia fisica y politica de Chile".
