In small, compact handwriting, recounting a strange crime Saint-Exupéry witnessed in a small provincial town, involving neither a body nor a murderer, merely traces of blood on the pavement: "Je me souviens d'un crime qui m'a impressionné [...] un crime sans cadavre et sans assassin. Le corps avait déjà été enlevé, escamoté comme dans la légende antique. Et il restait sur le pavé juste assez de sang pour servir de signe [...] C'était vers onze heures du soir dans une petite ville de province. Je rentrais à l'hôtel [...] je marchais vite il faisait froid. Les pas sonnaient clair sous les étoiles [...]".
About the arrival of the police, who treated the affair as an administrational matter, people speculating on the case, and the surgeon who would treat the wounded person in hospital: "Et le malade poussera un grand cri que le chirurgien n'entendra pas [...] parce que sa pensée va plus haut et passe au-dessus de ce cri [...] Le chirurgien entend ce cri et il ébauche un léger sourire. Il guérira cet homme [...]".
