Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Named after one of his ancestors, the 6th President of the United States, Adams specialized in portraiture, genre and landscape painting. His work comprised portraits of prominent members of Viennese society, including an unusual group portrait showing Dr. Ernst Wertheim performing gynecological surgery, as well as scenes from the Eastern theatre of WWI.

Small tear in upper margin; corners slightly creased. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
