A controversial figure due to his support of colonialism as well as the Nazi regime, Behn was appointed director of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1940 and is best known for his sculptures of African animals, inspired by his travels to German East Africa between 1907 and 1910.

Traces of stamps. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
