Working in London and Paris, Blanche was a successful, mainly self-taught portraitist of European nobility. Among his sitters were André Gide, Jean Cocteau, and Igor Strawinsky. He left behind a rich archive of correspondence with contemporary writers and artists.

Corners slightly creased. Self-addressed by the collector. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
