A self-taught marine painter, Bohrdt's work was funded by Kaiser Wilhelm II, whom he frequently joined on his trips to the Northern Sea and the Mediterranean. His most fruitful creative period ranged from the 1890s to the end of the First World War, when he was active both as a painter, and as an illustrator of books, newspapers and postcards.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
