Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Best known for his portraits of important figures including Adolphe Thiers, Victor Hugo, and Jules Grévy, Bonnat also created powerful religious and historical paintings. His 1874 depiction of the Crucifixion was rejected by the public as well as art critics for its naturalistic, almost expressionist style.

Self-addressed by the collector. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
