Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "von der Studienreise ins Hohe Venn 1909 [...]".

A late romanticist painter, Bracht applied himself to landscape painting, creating moody heath and coastal scenes in Northern Germany as well as orientalist landscapes inspired by his 1880 and 1881 visit to Syria, Palestine and Egypt before turning towards Impressionism around 1900. His painting "The Shore of Oblivion" ranks as one of the most recognizable and best-known works of Symbolism.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
