The most prominent interior painter of German Impressionism, Brandis joined the Dachau artists' colony in 1900 and was appointed a teacher at the faculty of architecture at the Aachen Technical University in 1909, depicting the cathedral of Aachen in several of his works.

Traces of a postmark. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
