Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Inspired by his trips to Italy, Greece, Turkey and Tunisia, Bredt applied himself to Orientalism, painting harem scenes and odalisques as well as landscapes, and co-founded the Munich Secession in 1892.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
