Following his teacher Alfred Baur to Düsseldorf in 1876, Brütt specialized in painting large crowds in urban or indoor settings, especially courtrooms, worked in Kronberg between 1898 and 1920, where he joined the Kronberg painters' colony, and created large landscape paintings.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
