Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Trained at the Vienna Academy of Arts, Canal lived in Düsseldorf between 1878 and 1895, was a member of the local artists' association "Malkasten", and specialized in landscape and marine painting, creating atmospheric views of historical towns, villages, castles and mills, as well as riverscapes and coastal scenery.

Corners a little creased; traces of a postmark. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
