Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Per aspera ad astra! […]".

Starting out in Trier, Cologne and Düsseldorf, Coubillier went on study journeys to Rome between 1901 and 1906, where he was a member of the German artists' association, and created various statues, reliefs, tombs and monuments in Düsseldorf and its surroundings, including the fountains "Tritonenbrunnen" and "Industriebrunnen".

Traces of a postmark. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
