Born in Bologna, Courten joined the Munich Academy of Arts in 1872 and went on to become a popular portraitist and genre painter whose best-known works were created for the Herrenchiemsee palace, built for the Bavarian King Ludwig II between 1878 and 1886.
Self-addressed by the collector. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
