Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Employed at the studio of the popular German painter Carl Theodor von Piloty between 1867 and 1870, Defregger applied himself to history and genre painting, specialized in peasant motifs, portraits, and scenes from the Tyrolean Rebellion of 1809, and was appointed a teacher at the Munich Academy of Arts in 1878.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
