Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Arbeit ist das einzige Vergnügen das ich lange Zeit aushalten kann [...]".

Working as a freelance illustrator from 1873 onwards, Doepler specialized in heraldic and commercial motifs, his works including the arms of the "Börsenverein des deutschen Buchhandels", the coat of arms of the Weimar Republic, and the Essen city arms, as well as illustrations in heraldic handbooks and over 50 bookplates.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
