Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. With a quotation and signature by Eckener's daughter Lisa on the reverse: "Da mein Vater nicht zu Haus ist, sende ich Ihnen meine Grüße [...] Hurra, jetzt ist er da!".

After completing his studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, Eckener returned to his hometown Flensburg in 1892 and joined the artists' colony "Ekensund" before moving to Stuttgart, where he studied etching and founded his own etching school in 1905. His illustrations for Theodor Storm's novella "Der Schimmelreiter" constitute one of his most important works.

Some small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
