Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Es grüne die Tanne, es wachse das Erz | Gott schenke uns Allen ein fröhliches Herz [...]".

A pioneer of vanguard-modernist painting in Germany, Engel co-founded the Berlin Secession and was greatly inspired by his visits to Föhr in the North Sea between 1901 and 1914, where he specialized in painting local girls dressed in traditional costume amidst Nordic scenery.

A few small creases and ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
