Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Ihrem Wunsche willfahre ich mit einem Gruss aus Wartenberg/Oberbayern [...]".

Appointed professor and director of the sculpture department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Weimar in 1913, Engelmann created war memorials in Apolda and Vacha, as well as funerary monuments, busts and sculptures. Of Jewish descent, Engelmann was fired by the National Socialists in 1930; after WWII he received several commissions from the German city of Freiburg im Breisgau.

Small creases near corners. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
