Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Ergebensten Gruss [...]".

Best known for his animal sculptures and porcelain figurines, Esser's employers included the Schwarzburger Werkstätten from 1908, the Meissen porcelain manufacture from 1920 to 1931, where he operated a master's atelier from 1925, as well as the Royal Porcelain Manufacture in Berlin and the Rosenthal company.

Traces of an angular fold. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
