Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Anbei gewünschtes Autogramm den Betrag den Sie geben wollen senden Sie bitte an Künstlerunterstützungsverein München [...]".
Exter, whose style could range from Historicism to Expressionism, was a pioneer of mondernist painting in Munich and operated a renowned painting school in his home in Übersee-Feldwies at Chiemsee from 1902 onwards. His work comprised figural compositions, portraits, landscapes and nudes.
Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
