Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Born in Kassel, Gerhardt followed his teacher Johann Werner Henschel to Rome in 1844, where he lived until shortly before his death. He created a large oeuvre in classicist style, the majority of which is today located in Kassel.

Traces of a small oval postal stamp. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
