Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Self-taught as an artist, Gradl created romantic genre and landscape paintings, including over 200 oil studies and drawings of the Rhine, and was commissioned with six monumental paintings for the Neue Reichskanzlei in Berlin in 1939. The absence of any sign of contemporary infrastructure such as rails or streets constitute a characteristic feature of his work.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
