Best known for his genre paintings, Gräßel specialized in peasant motifs and birds, especially ducks, which earned him the byname "Entenmaler". He settled in Emmering near Fürstenfeldbruck in 1900, a spot inhabited by various artists who came to be known as the "Brucker Maler".

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
