Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Creating his first painting "Ährenlesende Ruth und Boas" during his time as an officer in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Habermann was admitted to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts the following year and joined the artists' association "Allotria" in 1880. His later works were influenced by the style of El Greco.

A few small creases and faint ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
