Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

A member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, Herter specialized in statues of mythological figures. His most famous works include "The Dying Achilles", acquired by Elisabeth of Austria as the centrepiece for her Achilleion palace in Corfu, and the Heinrich Heine memorial sculpture "Lorelei Fountain" unveiled in New York City in 1899.

Small ink spots; postmark on verso slightly showing through. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
