Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 page.

Punningly inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau, sending a Latin quotation ("Art is my law") which doubles as a ribald German invective against the unsolicited autograph collector: "Lex mihi ars [...]".

Having studied in Dresden, Nuremberg, Munich and Berlin, Hosaeus exhibited his works at the "Große Berliner Kunstausstellung" for the first time in 1899. He devoted himself to monumental sculpture, specializing in war memorials, and taught at the Berlin Technical University from 1918 onwards.

Traces of postmarks; tiny ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
