Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Joining the Berlin Secession in 1899, Hübner worked in Berlin and spent his summers in Hamburg, Lübeck, Rostock and Travemünde, where he specialized in harbour and other maritime scenes. In 1905 he was one of the first artists to be awarded the Villa Romana Prize.

Small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
