A leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School, Israëls started out painting historical and dramatic subjects in the romantic style of the day before turning towards Realism, resulting in moving paintings inspired by the fishers' humble life in the villages of Zandvoort and Katwijk.

Postage stamp next to the signature. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
