Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Die größten Schwierigkeiten liegen da, wo wir sie nicht suchen [...]".
Making a living as a portraitist during his years of training, Koester later devoted himself to landscape and genre painting. Ducks constituted his preferred motif, and his popular, award-winning works earned him the byname "Enten-Koester".
Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
