Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Inspired by study tours to Egypt, East Africa and India, Kuhnert specialized in animal painting. He was one of the first artists to paint tropical animals in their natural habitat instead of in zoological gardens; his work comprises watercolour and oil paintings as well as etchings and illustrations for educational works including "Brehms Tierleben" (1900) and Johann Wilhelm Haacke's "Tierleben der Erde" (1901).

A few tiny ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
