Lefler, Heinrich, Austrian painter, graphic artist and stage designer (1863-1919). Autograph quotation signed.

Vienna, 2. III. 1918.

Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 page.

Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Wer dem Publikum dient, ist ein armes Tier, er quält sich ab, niemand bedankt sich dafür. Goethe [...]".

A founding member of the artists' association "Hagenbund" in 1902 and a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Lefler became the head designer at the Vienna State Opera in 1901, where he designed and shipped a set to the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1902, before transferring to the Vienna Burgtheater in 1903. The creative work he did during the summer months in Weissenbach an der Triesting, including murals for villas and hotels as well as invitations for town fairs, constitute another important part of his oeuvre.

A few tiny ink spots and small creases. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
