A co-founder of the Worpswede artists' colony and a professor at the Weimar Kunsthochschule since 1908, Mackensen specialized in painting landscapes and peasant scenes. His award-winning painting "Gottesdienst im Freien", exhibited in Munich in 1895, put the Worpswede colony on the cultural map.

Small ink spots near lower right corner; traces of angular folds near lower left corner. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
