A representative of German Expressionism, Pechstein created figure paintings, frequently featuring exotic motifs from the Palau islands, as well as still lifes and landscapes inspired by the Curonian Spit at the Baltic Sea, where he greatly influenced the artists' colony Nidden between 1909 and 1939.

Traces of several postmarks. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
