A prominent landscape painter, Riess frequently travelled Germany and Holland, spent the summer of 1888 in the Dachau artists' colony practicing plein air painting, and was awarded a silver medal in London in 1889.
Traces of a postmark; small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
