Specializing in portraiture, genre and nude painting, Ritter was appointed professor for portraiture at the Karlsruhe Academy in 1888, taught at this institution until 1919, and was awarded a gold medal at the "Internationale Kunstausstellung" in Berlin in 1896.
A few tiny ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
