Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Name ist Schall und Rauch! Faust I [...]".

Living in Rome from 1888 and making study tours through Italy and to Northern Africa, Roeder applied himself to landscape and veduta paintings evoking a heroic, romantic and symbolist atmosphere. His preferred motifs included Roman villas and the Alban Hills.

Some small ink spots and creases. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
